A Ballyneety, nella contea di Limerick, il paesaggio ondulato e verdeggiante della splendida campagna irlandese fa da sfondo alla presenza di uno tra i più moderni impianti di imbottigliamento d’acqua di sorgente in Europa: ISHKA Irish Spring Water.
Fondata nel 1978 da Michael Sutton, l’azienda è oggi gestita dai figli Mike e Denis. Ogni ora l’impianto, composto da tre linee completamente automatizzate realizzate con la partnership di SMI, produce oltre 40.000 bottiglie di acqua di sorgente con la massima attenzione per la cura e la preservazione dell’ambiente circostante.
Crescere insieme. La partnership di lunga data
La collaborazione tra ISHKA e SMI è iniziata 15 anni fa con l’acquisto di una fardellatrice in film termoretraibile SK300 F, attualmente installata all’interno della linea di produzione n° 1 dedicata all’imballaggio di bottiglie da 250 ml, 500 ml, 750 ml, 1,5 L e 2 L. Nel 2017, in occasione dell’apertura della filiale SMI UK & Ireland con sede a Manchester (Regno Unito), i fratelli Sutton si sono rivolti a SMI per l’espansione degli impianti con l’installazione di una nuova linea di imbottigliamento per incrementare la produzione del formato da 5 L, molto richiesto dal mercato.
Impianti efficienti e flessibili
La soluzione “chiavi in mano” fornita da SMI ha riguardato anche un nuovo design del contenitore con l’abbandono della tradizionale forma quadrata e il lancio di una nuova bottiglia dalla forma cilindrica.
Una scelta innovativa che ha permesso all’azienda irlandese di ridurre la quantità di PET in ogni bottiglia e di allineare l’aspetto del contenitore da 5 litri a quello delle altre eleganti bottiglie d’acqua ISHKA di capacità inferiore.
Elevate prestazioni in poco spazio
Il progetto di espansione dell’azienda irlandese ha reso necessario un “upgrade” della linea preesistente, che ha comportato la sostituzione della vecchia soffiatrice lineare con un moderno sistema integrato ECOBLOC® fornito da SMI, composto da una soffiatrice rotativa a 3 cavità, una riempitrice elettronica e un tappatore.
La progettazione di una questa nuova linea di produzione efficiente ha consentito ad ISHKA di aumentare la capacità dell’impianto di oltre il 50%.
Principali vantaggi delle soluzioni fornite da SMI
- Il nuovo sistema integrato di stiro-soffiaggio e riempimento è più rapido ed efficiente rispetto alla pre-esistente soluzione con soffiatrice lineare. Il nuovo impianto ha inoltre un ingombro compatto grazie al fatto che non sono necessari nastri trasportatori tra la soffiatrice e la riempitrice.
- Il progetto ha rappresentato una sfida anche nell’ambito del confezionamento secondario, poiché ISHKA richiedeva formati di pacco in film termoretraibile nelle configurazioni in 2×1 e 3×1 e un formato grande (4×5) in vassoio per realizzare una confezione da mezza paletta. SMI è stata in grado di soddisfare le richieste del cliente grazie alla versatilità della fardellatrice SK 502 T ERGON, una macchina a doppia pista adatta al confezionamento secondario in vassoi con e senza film dotata di un sistema opzionale per realizzare anche fardelli in solo film.
- Questa soluzione di confezionamento secondario è vantaggiosa anche dal punto di vista economico per ISHKA che, in passato utilizzava due macchine separate (una per l’avvolgimento con film e una per la creazione di “maxi” vassoi), mentre con la soluzione offerta da SMI è sufficiente una sola confezionatrice automatica, che esegue entrambe le lavorazioni ed occupa meno spazio all’interno della linea di produzione.
- Il sistema di palettizzazione e il fine linea gestisce sia i piccoli pacchi multipli 2×1 e 3×1 sia il formato vassoio da mezza paletta, che vengono posizionati automaticamente su una paletta standard del Regno Unito per lo stoccaggio a magazzino.

In Ballyneety, county Limerick, the rolling and luscious green landscape of the wonderful Irish countryside is the backdrop to one of the most modern bottling plants of spring water in Europe: ISHKA Irish Spring Water.
Founded in 1978 by Michael Sutton, the company is today managed by the sons Mike and Denis. Every hour the plant, composed of three fully automated lines realized in partnership with SMI, produces over 40,000 bottles of spring water, with the utmost attention paid to the care and the preservation of the surrounding environment.
Growing together. A long-standing partnership
The collaboration between ISHKA and SMI began 15 years ago with the purchase of an SK 300 F shrink wrapper, that is currently installed within the production line 1, dedicated to the packaging of 250 ml, 500 ml, 750 ml, 1.5 L and 2 L bottles. In 2017, on the occasion of the opening of the SMI UK & Ireland branch based in Manchester (United Kingdom), the Sutton brothers turned to SMI for the expansion of the plants with the installation of a new bottling line to increase the production of the 5 L format, which is in great market demand.
Efficient and flexible plants
The turn-key solution supplied by SMI also involved a new design of the container, discarding the traditional square shape and launching a new cylindrical bottle.
An innovative choice that allowed the Irish company to reduce the amount of PET in each bottle and to align the look of the 5 L container with that of the other elegant ISHKA water bottles with a smaller capacity.
High performance in a small space
The expansion project of the Irish company made it necessary to upgrade the existing line, which involved the replacement of the old linear blow moulder with a modern integrated SMI ECOBLOC® system, consisting of a 3-cavity rotary blow moulder, an electronic filler and a capper.
The design of this new efficient production line allowed ISHKA to increase the plant capacity by over 50%.
Main advantages of SMI line solutions
- The new integrated stretch-blow moulding and filling system is faster and more efficient than the existing solution with the linear blow moulder. Furthermore, the new plant has a compact footprint, thanks to the fact that no conveyor belts are required between the blow moulder and the filler.
- The project represented a challenge even within the secondary packaging, as ISHKA required shrink film pack formats in 2×1 and 3×1 configurations and a large tray format (4×5) to realize a half pallet pack. SMI has been able to meet the requirements of the customer thanks to the versatility of the SK 502 T shrink wrapper, a double-lane machine suitable for the secondary packaging in tray with and without film, equipped with an optional system to produce packs in film only.
- This secondary packaging solution has advantages from the economic point of view for ISHKA that in the past used two separate machines (one for wrapping in film and one for creating trays), while with the solution supplied by SMI an automatic packer can produce both packs and occupies less space inside the production line.
- The palletizing and end-of-line system manages both the small 2×1 and 3×1 multiple packs and the half-pallet tray format, that are automatically placed on a standard UK pallet for storage in the warehouse.
